The promise of Christmas is found not in getting the perfect gift for a loved one, or hosting family gatherings where everyone gets along. The promise starts with God speaking through the prophets of the Old Testament about a child who is to be born. It continues to grow in the angel’s visit to young Mary, and really comes to life in the song that she sings to her older cousin Elizabeth. The promise of Christmas includes filling those with deep hunger with good things. We see the promise of justice coming to the world to make what is wrong right. All this from the heart of a young woman who was brave enough to say yes to God’s invitation. As we worship on this fourth Sunday of Advent, may we find courage in the promise of Christmas. Luke 1:39-45 will guide our hearts in worship.
